What You Should Know About the 2021 Skoda Octavia

The 2021 Skoda Octavia is slated to launch in India during July. The sedan’s launch date for Nepal, however, has not yet been confirmed by the official distributor of Skoda cars here, MAW Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. If it is to make its way to Nepal, the launch is expected to be held during the early fourth quarter of 2021.

For now, we have gathered all the information you should know before the 2021 Skoda Octavia hits the roads of Nepal.

Exterior

Let’s start with the design. At first glance, the Skoda Octavia might not look very exciting, but as you get to know the car deeper, it will grow on you. The Octavia’s overall design is pretty Skoda-ish–as in, the design is informed by the brand’s penchant for opting for subtle aesthetics. Compared to the previous model of the sedan, the fourth-gen Octavia does not feature too many changes, except that the twin headlamps of earlier have now been replaced by a more conventional single-piece unit. The front grille extends to meet the headlights. The sides feature a strong shoulder line, along with a narrowing roofline that ends in a fastback-style boot. The rear is fairly uncluttered, but it does feature standout design elements including striking LED tail lamps and the brand lettering flaunted on the tailgate. The continuation of the design language of the Skoda line–which features conventional headlamps on the sides of the grille, clean lines, and subtle creases along the body–make the 2021 Skoda Octavia more closely resemble the larger Superb.

Interior

The interior is as sophisticated as the exterior. It comes in a clean and minimalistic style. One of the major pros of the Skoda models is their practicality, and it’s thus not surprising that the Octavia is a spacious model. The cabin for the international-based model comes in an all-black colour scheme; the India-spec model, however, is expected to come in a beige-on-black interior colour scheme. The international-based model also gets soft-touch materials throughout the cabin that deliver a more premium feel. On the dash, there will be a 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Powertrain

Power in the international base-model comes from the same 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine used in the earlier version, while the 2021 Octavia making its way to India will be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI turbo-petrol engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive. The engine will generate 190hp of power and 320Nm of torque. The Skoda Octavia’s predecessor was also offered with a 143hp, 2.0-litre TDI turbo-diesel engine. This time around, though, the diesel variant will not be offered in India, which means it will not be available in Nepal as well.

Platform

The fourth-gen Octavia rides on the modular MQB platform, which it shares with the latest Volkswagen Golf. The MQB chassis has allowed the manufacturer to extend the dimensions of the new Octavia, and the car is now 19mm longer and 15mm wider than the previous model (4689mm long, 1829mm wide, and 1470mm tall). The sedan’s wheelbase is 2686mm and the car’s mileage is approximately 16 kmpl.

Features

The standard equipment includes a virtual cockpit digital instrument cluster, paddle shifters, privacy glass, full LED headlights, LED tail lights with dynamic indicators, ambient lighting, silver roof rails, rear centre-armrest, dual USB-C ports, Bluetooth phone connectivity, eight speakers, power tailgate, keyless start, umbrella in the driver’s door, foldable luggage hooks, two tablet holders, and rain-sensing wipers, which we believe will be featured in the Asian models as well. The sedan’s boot has a storage space of 600 litres. The boot is quite spacious for a family, but it does have a boot lip that might create some difficulty when hoisting heavy luggage into it.

Additional features on the 2021 Octavia might include 19-inch alloy wheels, memory for exterior mirrors, leather seat trim, an auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror, powered and ventilated front seats with electric lumbar and massage, under-thigh front seat extensions, heated front and rear seats, five USB-C ports, DAB+ radio, 12-speaker sound system, drive mode selection, tri-zone climate control, and a head-up display, among others.

Safety

The safety of the passengers is handled by standard safety equipment such as adaptive cruise control, airbags (up to 10), emergency assist, blind-spot monitoring and assist, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and rear parking sensors. Additionally, the 2021 Skoda Octavia has a five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating. The sedan has garnered a score of 92 percent for adult-occupant protection, 88 percent for child-occupant protection, 73 percent for vulnerable road-user protection, and 79 percent for safety assist.
