2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 Makes a Global Debut with Official Specs

Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, has released the all-new 2022 YZF-R7 as the latest cruiserweight supersport motorcycle in the company portfolio. Following several rumours, speculations, and teasers, Yamaha has finally offered the latest model as a successor for the beloved YZF-R6 and to fill the gap after its withdrawal–because the R6 could not meet the strict Euro-5 emission standards.

Whilst the R7 is said to be a successor for the R6, and at a glance, it does look like it, what’s written on paper suggests otherwise. The first thing you’ll notice is the engine. The YZF-R7 is said to be powered by a 689cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke, in-line two-cylinder, DOHC CP2 engine, which is also used in its sibling, the naked streetfighter MT-07. For its part, the Yamaha YZF-R6 used a 599cc, inline four-cylinder engine to draw its power. It is also worth noting that the MT-07 platform the R7 is based on is the one the firm used for its extremely popular, affordable, middleweight, and naked bike that also became an adventure bike.

As far as the power and torque output is concerned, the R7 produces 72 hp at 8750 rpm and 67 Nm. For the R6, the power was rated at 118 hp and the peak torque at 62 Nm at 6500 rpm. One transmission option offered for the R7 is a six-speed unit, and as an upside, it does come with a slip and assist function. Furthermore, an upshift-only quickshifter will be offered as an optional extra.

Similarly, Yamaha says the R7 is built from the ground up with a sleek ultra-thin lightweight chassis, which also differs from the R6. The R6 featured a tried and tested twin-spar chassis, while the R7 comes with a narrow, high-strength steel frame, which is similar to the one on the MT-07.

Finally, the design cues! The R6 was more like R1, due to its twin LED projectors peeking out of the front fairing. In the case of the R7, that is fully redone and comes with a single LED unit fitted centrally in the air scoop, but the LED DRLs have been retained. Similarly, the front windscreen is now taller than its predecessor’s, thus ensuring better protection from windblast. The side fairings have also been completely reworked and now come with massive scoops. The tail section of the R7 is distinctive and upright, as is the norm for the Yamaha R-series, and it looks bolder than the one in the previous iteration. All in all, it’s up to you to decide if you regard the R7 as the true successor of the mighty R6.

Owing to some of the details on the R7, some riders might feel the new bike is but another version of the MT-07. But we beg to differ. There are some key differences between these two models, and the R7 does feature new components. In place of the non-adjustable telescopic units upfront on the MT-07, the 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 gets 41mm fully adjustable KYB upside-down forks. The brakes are also different: while the MT-07 uses twin 298mm discs at the front with axial calipers, the R7 comes with radially mounted four-pot calipers.

The 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 is not of a similar breed as the original R7 as well. Apart from the name, the all-new R7 has nothing to do with the original R7, which was a superbike homologation special from the late 90s.

Although the R-7 has already been launched internationally, it’s uncertain when the 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 will be launched in Nepal. As of now, the R7 is priced in the US at USD 8,999, and we do believe the supersport motorcycle will make its way to Nepal once it hits the Indian market.
