Beijing Automobile Works Co., Ltd is one of the pioneers of Chinese automobile industry, the origin and epitome of the development of automobile industry in Beijing in the last half century, and the representative brand of the nation. The former Beijing Automobile Works was founded in 1958 as the second largest automobile factory in China, with its name inscribed by Mr. Zhude, Chairman of the National People’s Congress. In 2001, it was developed into Beijing Automobile Works Co., Ltd. (BAW) based on modern enterprise system.
BAW has been manufacturing light off-road vehicles and trucks for 40 years, and is crowned as “family of road-off vehicles”. While focusing on off-road vehicles, it also develops commercial vehicles and special vehicles to meet the demands of military users, the domestic civilian market as well as the overseas market. With an accumulated productive capacity of over 1 million vehicles, and a sound contribution to the economic development and national defense, it becomes the fixed supplier of military purpose vehicles and the backbone company in the light off-road industry.
BAW takes the lead in China in independent R&D and manufacturing, the fruits of which include 4 series of products, military light off-road vehicles, civilian light off-road vehicles (SUV), trucks and amphibious vehicles. What we have here is the Yongshi Warrior, or just Warrior for short. It was jointly developed by Beijing Auto Works and Chrysler. A concept vehicle was revealed in 2002. Chinese Army got very interested in the project, as it was looking to replace their previous light utility vehicles. So a couple of prototypes were made specially for the Chinese army. Eventually it was adopted and production of the Warrior began in 2005. Deliveries to the Chinese Army began in 2007. In 2009 due to financial troubles in the US the Chrysler left the joint venture and granted Beijing Auto Works the rights to continue production of this vehicle under its own name. Currently the Warrior is being produced in large numbers. It is the most widely used 4×4 vehicle in the Chinese army and the PLA. It is also used by some paramilitary and law enforcement units and also the UN.
The Warrior is a military grade offroad machine, it is larger than the Cherokee it is based on, It is used as a troop and cargo transport, command vehicle or reconnaissance vehicle, and now BAW has finally a civilian vehicle based on this military truck. BAW has given the Warrior a civilian attire and a 4 cylinder 2.5 liter turbo diesel engine mated to a 5 speed manual transmission that produces 110 BHp @ 3800 rpm and 340 Nm of torque in as low as 2000 rpm, the double cab pick up will have a fully functional 4 wheel drive system and is 225mm above the ground.
